Swimming is tough because it is like walking when you were a kid. But you have lost all the innocence of a kid and fear has taken the place in your mind. So, learning anything from basic is a nightmare and swimming is a beast. Because you are learning to walk in water and that is difficult than walking on land.
You fall more times when you are a kid because you are weak. And there is pain, cry and people come helping you. But since you are kid, you forget and then try again. You don’t know there is a possibility of death. Also the number of people taking care for you is huge. Slowly pushing boundaries you learn to walk.
On the contrast, swimming makes you sweat because you can feel pain and see yourself as a failure. And you now know there is a possibility of being dead if you do something wrong.
Suddenly it becomes 10 times more difficult than it was already. You keep every feet with care and study every movement like your life dependent on it. And why not, that is indeed the case.
Along the way, you learn some of the basics of swimming like you need to float before swimming, paddle your ways and then do the treading with your hands and legs. This is important because if you don’t then you will fall down in the middle of pool unable to come up and die along. Or if you are lucky, someone will save you and scold you.
One of the toughest things to learn for me was treading – standing still by making quick movements with hands and legs. I tried hard in the shallow water slowly progressing my way to the deep water. I feared for my life and would hold on to the railing for support. Often I would get tired and then my body would go down and boy I was scared.
After I mastered it, I would swim with less fear and more confidence. And slowly my body got used to the function of swimming. There came days where I felt like tired and just putting myself in the pool made me water. And I didn’t made any effort to swim, my body would swim automatically.
Enter the handicapped girl. There came a girl who was handicapped by hand and boy she was swimming.
I got shocked – how in the world she could. Of course, I was ignorant. My knowledge that you need to move your hands to tread just vanished out of the window. The basic principle applied – your body is amazing and capable of more things than you can imagine.
Also, there is nothing which can stop you unless you let it. So be brave and conquer the world regardless. What other choice do you have.
