When you first join the swimming class – you want to know all the FAQs. Whether you can learn it within 10 days – sorta looking for magic pill. Is there training available for certain time – a person who thinks she is busy.
And then there is a person who asks she is fearful and don’t know anything. This is a majority of the people who have assumed things from the beginning and need some comfort.
Can this fear of water be erased? Is there a way to learn swimming which accompanies the ingrained fear of the person? Let’s find out…
The Idea of Fear
Being a kid is the fascinating thing – you are free from all the responsibilities. And you can play, eat and do pranks most of the times. Which is great – but as a kid you don’t have much power.
You have to rely on parents for everything. Taking permissions is a real pain. You are bound to get shut down a lot because of the irrelevant and nonsensical demands from you.
Amidst all of these, a basic idea of fear is being instilled in you – slowly and exponentially. Because it works better than shouting at you.
What is the first thing you did when your parents told you to not go out at night? You tried to go out at night – sometimes you looked forward to it. Then your parents used the known defence with them – they told you about the mystical person who will take you away. They instilled fear in your because they didn’t want you to do some stupid things. Well, because you are a kid with little brain.
But these fears make a home deep inside and then you see the outer world with an eye of fear. It takes hold of many adult decisions you take.
No way out
It seems as if there is no way out of this fear cycle. Once you grow up there is fear for almost everything. Fear of rejection in relationship, career and the fear of the unknown.
The more you allow fear to take hold of you – the more deeply you fall with seemingly no rescue. Desperation kicks in – seems there is no way out. And whatever tasks you take in life – there is a fear of rejection. So you end up becoming normal. You don’t try the new things – and do the expected things with a slow rate. Because what if people laugh, is there a colleague – I feel embarrassed.
And slowly you let the dark idea sip into your mind that – there is no way out.
The Magic – Personal Story
My whole life I have this unknown fear of swimming – what if I drown or I go out of breath. What if I can’t get hold of the bottom and get upside down – thousands of scenarios used to play in my head.
And thus I refrained from trying something basic like swimming which is accessible in a safe environment among the lifeguards- not to mention shallow waters. But the fear is strong – the idea is deeply woven in our brain and it is difficult to remove them. Read difficult but not impossible.
Fast forward when I learnt the swimming in the shallow water – it was the time I go in the deep water. The fear kicked in – my feet won’t touch the bottom. There is no way I will be able to swim.
Then the lifeguard told me to swim along the corners and she would give stick to catch on. I tried the swimming and before I knew it – I was reached the other section of the pool. Oh my god – I did it. A little push and the belief made my fear went away. Of course, I needed to learn more things to be stable in deep water – but the initial push and confidence paved the way for me.
And the same can with you too – believe and keep pushing. There is no other alternative to succeed.
