Swimming is a great exercise – it works on all your body parts. And the exhaustion is less because you are in water. The result is that you can use swimming to do more than your normal exercise. Of course it doesn’t work on specific body muscle – but it does help in increasing stamina, strength and agility.
But can it be a source of losing weight too? What if you do multiple rounds of swimming as a measure to lose weight – would it be faster?
Before we can relate swimming to losing those heavy pounds, you need to understand the basic nature/process involved in a fat loss or weight loss program. Let’s dive in…
The Basic Of Losing Weight
Losing weight is hard – if it were easy everyone would do it. Partly it is genetics, partly it is your metabolism and rest is your discipline.
Exercising day and night won’t help you cut down the fat because it helps to build strength and muscle. At the basic core, you need to make sure you lose calories everyday. For example, if you require 1000 calories everyday then make sure to consume only 800 calories. This creates a deficit and the remaining required calories is utilized from the stored energy.
And that’s how you lose weight. So it ain’t only exercise, Because running, training and lifting weight does help. But mostly it is your calorie intake that is the most important.
You can ignore exercise and focus solely on nutrition and food intake. And you will end up losing weight. But if you focus solely on the exercise – then weight loss is difficult.
The best case is to consult a nutritionist, trainer and doctor in general to get the idea of a routine you should follow for a desired weight loss.
Feel Good Feeling
So yeah as you can relate – using swimming as a means of weight loss won’t affect you much as long as you don’t count your calories too. Swimming inherently can be done as a feel good activity. When you are in water – you are partly in a pool of enjoyment.
Almost all the adults love to jump in and splash the water around. Also, it is fun to race to complete the lap or just enjoy the slow swimming while looking around.
The ability to float around in water, seeing everything through water just feels richer. The experience is heavenly, the body feels amazing sensation and your mood is uplifted.
What more can you ask for – weight loss. NO, don’t focus on swimming if your goal is weight loss, instead focus on calorie deficit technique. Take the idea of swimming as an extension to your regime.
When you work in a day job at a corporate company you tend to get tired. Because there is traveling of around 3 hours – also riffs happen on an on-going basis. So, you need an outlet to to let everything come at peace. It’s like a meditation where you can calm your inner thoughts and channel yourself to become a better person.
And that’s why I go to swimming. It is a place for me where I lose my stress the moment I enter the water. It’s as if the God has made this place for this very reason.
Some people read books, some talk to their mentors and I love to take dip in the cold swimming pool. In a way, the water robs me off my ill feelings and hand me new skin full of hope, energy and direction. The negative feeling subside and the positive ones takes the fore-font.
I hope you find your place in swimming as a way to bust the stress. Because unlike weight loss, it is almost guaranteed that your stress will come down.
