When you are just starting out and don’t know anything about swimming, it is difficult to do anything new in the water. After some time, your legs and hand feel tired doing the repetitive actions and moving nowhere.
That’s why you should opt for the maximum 45 minutes routine. But should you go to the swim practice daily – like 7 days a week.
Won’t it become too much or tiring after a while
Yes, it can get tiring and seems like too much work. If you want to get in the desired result of you being able to swim elegantly, you have to toil every week. I didn’t go for the 7 days because that won’t give my body any time to recover. So I opted for the 5 days a week. Monday to Friday – I would get along with or without my buddies and learn the swimming.
The progress was slow, nothing new to do everyday. But the very act of going is a form of discipline. And it instills a sense in the body that you aren’t going to stop.
I learnt swimming in about 8 months to 1 year of timeframe. And looking back, I can assure one thing – I wouldn’t be able to swim if I hadn’t gone to swim every weekday.
Everyone is different – some learn faster than others. I am in the slow category. So it was necessary for me to show up despite seeing no progress, despite no motivation and despite feeling completely exhausted. Some days I just went in and stayed in water and did nothing. Even that time it helped me and my body in miraculous way.
As Steve Jobs said you can only connect the dots looking backwards. So doesn’t matter if today doesn’t makes sense. It is alright, just keep pushing and showing up.
Sometimes showing up is half the work. It is a common trait in people opting for fitness in gym. Many people sign up but few show up continuously. Once you stop showing up, you lose the momentum and ultimately quit.
Be tough on you, no matter what set a routine number of days – maximum initially and keep showing up. Slowly it will unfold into something big, have belief.
Ever been to a temple or meditation center. When you go there, the idea isn’t that you will be able to meditate for 2 hours. But still you are supposed to sit for a longer time period. You are free to stand up and go. But the people who sit down learn it faster.
Because they are conditioning their body that this is the new truth – you can’t hide it. Better get used to it now.
Sometimes giving yourself no choice is the best choice. If you try to find excuses to skip the days then you can find thousands. But I challenge you to do the opposite.
Find as many excuses as you can to continue showing. For example, I will show up today because
- growth is important to me
- that is how habits are formed
- i love this new thing
- being uncomfortable is good
- in the end, I will have new skill
What is your excuse to do the 7 day swim?
