If your head is under water for most of the times in swimming, how are you supposed to breathe. Oh my gosh – I was so terrified that I had to be aware of my breathing every now and then.
But then I was aware of everything, my hands, legs and the fellow swimmers who were around me. Also I got tired a lot – so it was frustrating. But one thing I could tell you is this – it gets better with time. Once you master one thing, you almost forget to focus on that thing. It’s like magic – it happens automatically.
Remember the first time you started walking – of course you don’t because you were small. It was tough – your parents guided you and then you would practice it everyday. Until one day, you start walking. Almost like magic – but it was the deliberate practice each day.
And now you can walk from the nearby park to the home without even thinking of where to keep the next feet. Because you had done it so many times, it is engraved in your mind.
The same things happen with swimming, once you start practicing breathing, it is tough. You might feel that is risky. But not worry – all you are doing now is practicing the breathing in shallow water. If anything goes wrong, you can stand up and boom it is over. You have got another chance to do it again. The idea is doing it deliberately again and again. But what is that you should be practicing.
Is there a trick or method? Let’s dive in…
3 Breathing Tips
- When your head is above the water, breathe in with your mouth
- Slowly go down vertically and when your head is beneath water, breathe out with your mouth.
- Don’t focus on the nose breathing
Yes, you don’t have to focus on the nose breathing. It takes care of itself in the process. Just focus on deliberating breathing in through your mouth when in air. And deliberately breathing out through your mouth when in water. This breathing is needed when you actually start swimming.
The idea here is the same. You need to do this enough times that it becomes the second nature. Such that if you go inside water, you should automatically start breathing out.
At this stage, we are practicing the rhythm of breathing and floating. You should move forward with the next steps once you are doing good in floating and breathing.
So ahead and practice. Remember it is the practice that makes everyone near to perfect.
