Having a trainer helps a lot – because you are not left to yourself figuring out everything. Also it is better to ask questions and get direct answers from experience. You feel like someone is watching your back.
So, when me and my colleague joined the swimming pool – we were looking for someone who could become our trainer.
My friend identified someone who he hired to be a trainer. I was reluctant so I didn’t hired anyone. Instead I made a deal – whatever he would learn – he would teach me the same. So I would be able to train without hiring anyone.
It felt like I saved a great deal. And off I was to learn swimming with the help of my friend who had a trainer. Let’s dive in to see how this unfolded…
The trainer which my friend had hired turned out to be a dupe – she was not dedicated, focused and cared the least if my friend made any progress. Obviously, there wasn’t much my friend could teach me to help.
Both of us were in the state where we have to learn everything on our own. Yes, we watched a lot of YouTube videos to get a hang of it – yes, we interacted a lot with other swimmers to know the basics. But for the major part – we were pushing each other to become better.
The Final Push
My friend had almost learnt swimming and could swim 2 laps on the length. Meanwhile I struggled to even do the breadth. No matter how much I try – I was unable to muster the courage to swim.
Then there came a savior. One of the other trainer jumped in and helped me pass through the last phase of my training. Partly I asked for it, partly she did it out of her generosity. And boom – I did my first length lap and it felt magical.
At that moment, I realized how much a good trainer can do. Seeing back, if this trainer was the one whom we would have met – then we would have learnt swimming quicker and better.
So, if you are on the fence thinking you could learn swimming without a trainer, then you are right. But the road is difficult and it takes more time. The alternative – find a good trainer and give your best. I highly recommend the latter path. Good luck.
