Swimming is something most of my friends ignored for many reasons – they were too old for this, it would be embarrassing and a ton of procrastination. It was easy to just stick to the normal routine than go out and do the swimming.
Of course, there were barriers like form filling, doing the medical check up and the act of going to swim everyday, many people find it challenging. The reasons is simple – it is a new habit to cultivate.
And our mind and body isn’t made to accept resistance. You look for stability and as such doing something out of ordinary isn’t welcomed.
So one of my friend – both of them non-swimmers, filled up the form and other didn’t.
Slowly she started going to swim and other girl procrastinated even more. Days become weeks and those became months. And now when I look at both of them – one of them knew swimming. And comes regular with me or without me. The other girl is still debated how difficult is to manage a family.
When I ask her, let’s go to swimming next week – there pops up an excuse and she is back to her normal stuff.
It is easy to blame than act on things. So when she is confronted on why she can’t swim, she will point out that she is busy. But everyone has 24 hours and it is your priority and discipline which brings out all the change.
If you keep shifting the day of action then it might never come. You have to shift something else to make way for swimming and that’s the only way to go. And you don’t have to sacrifice on your family time. Quit watching television or watching the live events on social media and boom you have 4 hours of extra time everyday, maybe more.
Your time is in your hand and you decide what you want to do – either watch the nonsense debate on twitter or do something to enrich your life.
Another theme is of resistance of new things. But you will get used to it. Remember the first day of school – kids cry a lot because their comfort has been snatched. Slowly all of them make peace with the routine.
The same is true with swimming – in the initial days you will feel out of place because you will be slow and do things wrong.
And that is okay, you learn by making mistake. If you do this thing often and enough times then you will start enjoying the process. Better – you will start looking forward to swimming everyday. New tricks and techniques will fascinate you and the path is only getting better.
You can do what she did. All you need is a desire and willingness to fail fast. So you can try again and do it till you do it okay. By that time, it will become a habit.
And you will be left to do is improve and enjoy. Go get swimming now, you are worth it.
