The Urge Of Swimming
When I started swimming it was a fun activity for me. I used to go and dip in the water and then float around. The more I went the more I enjoyed it like a water park.
In resorts, you have to pay money and here I was getting the joy of water park without shedding a dime. And I could go to the swimming pool everyday.
It was like some sort of magic. Of course there weren’t the rides but it didn’t mattered. When you can float around and enjoy the water it is all worth it. At least it was for me in the initial month or so.
But your life is filled with ups and down – so how do you keep going to swimming?
Yes, you read that right – unlike many things which are repetitive in nature, swimming is something which helps you relax. After a tiring time in office breaking your muscles, it is a nice retreat.
From outside it might seem that going everyday and doing the same number of laps is tiring.
But once you are in water, your body experience the joy of highest order. The muscle pain seems to go away and the mental pressure is removed. Next time you are feeling low, go and take a dip.
The way I keep my urge of swimming consistent is by adding flavours and habit.
No matter what every Friday I had to swim. And that is the something I don’t avoid unless there is a medical or similar emergency. Also I try different things like learning to dive, doing stunts underwater from time to time to spice things up.
And it works more often there comes an urge to swim. And that’s how I know I am doing it right – go get swimming.
Ground Rules For Swimmng
When you want someone to hold your hand it becomes necessary that you trust them. Because in any relationship you need to give your 100 percent. If you hold even 1 percent then are you even trying.
Also there needs to be understanding. Getting angry is the most exposed human emotions. But when you are in relationship, you need to understand the situations and let the negative things subside. Because you value the connection more than proving someone that you are right.
Slowly as you progress in the relationship, you need some ground rules on which both of you agree. And follow that most of the times. And that’s how you build a great and lasting connection.
The same is true for swimming. If you have a swimming buddy then first step is to set some ground rules.
So what exactly is ground rule? Simply put it is some outcomes of scenarios which are already decided. And you need to follow that unless there is a real emergency like death, huge amount of money loss or something similar.
It is how Astronauts do amazing stuff in space. They don’t think on the spot and solve problems. On the contrary they have already practiced and planned numerous scenarios. And it has been locked in their memory. So when a real situation arises, they follow the planned decision.
Doing things in this fashion helps in avoiding conflict which might happen later. Because all the conflict have been already resolved.
Show And Learn
Here is the ground rule me and my buddy follow for a swimming routine:
- Swimming days are Monday, Tuesday and Friday
- Swimming on Friday is compulsory
- Swimming on Monday and Tuesday is bound by time 1830 hours
- If that time is passed and you are stuck in work then you skip swimming
- But the other person is free to go swimming. Indeed she is encouraged to go alone
I hope this guides you to make your own ground rule. Go make something and make it awesome.
Breathing Tips In Swimming
If your head is under water for most of the times in swimming, how are you supposed to breathe. Oh my gosh – I was so terrified that I had to be aware of my breathing every now and then.
But then I was aware of everything, my hands, legs and the fellow swimmers who were around me. Also I got tired a lot – so it was frustrating. But one thing I could tell you is this – it gets better with time. Once you master one thing, you almost forget to focus on that thing. It’s like magic – it happens automatically.
Remember the first time you started walking – of course you don’t because you were small. It was tough – your parents guided you and then you would practice it everyday. Until one day, you start walking. Almost like magic – but it was the deliberate practice each day.
And now you can walk from the nearby park to the home without even thinking of where to keep the next feet. Because you had done it so many times, it is engraved in your mind.
The same things happen with swimming, once you start practicing breathing, it is tough. You might feel that is risky. But not worry – all you are doing now is practicing the breathing in shallow water. If anything goes wrong, you can stand up and boom it is over. You have got another chance to do it again. The idea is doing it deliberately again and again. But what is that you should be practicing.
Is there a trick or method? Let’s dive in…
3 Breathing Tips
- When your head is above the water, breathe in with your mouth
- Slowly go down vertically and when your head is beneath water, breathe out with your mouth.
- Don’t focus on the nose breathing
Yes, you don’t have to focus on the nose breathing. It takes care of itself in the process. Just focus on deliberating breathing in through your mouth when in air. And deliberately breathing out through your mouth when in water. This breathing is needed when you actually start swimming.
The idea here is the same. You need to do this enough times that it becomes the second nature. Such that if you go inside water, you should automatically start breathing out.
At this stage, we are practicing the rhythm of breathing and floating. You should move forward with the next steps once you are doing good in floating and breathing.
So ahead and practice. Remember it is the practice that makes everyone near to perfect.
Rules Are Meant To Followed – #Swimming
Do you remember the first time you were told not to drink alcohol, it is addictive? Chances are after this statement you were immediately drawn to the idea of alcohol. The off-limits makes us curious to find out the reason behind it. And many times, you lean to drink alcohol because it was prohibited.
The more restrictions you put – the more you are pushing someone to become notorious.
You are a rebel and so am I. The first instinct any human being have is to oppose the change, restriction or new reform. That’s what makes us human – a basic one.
However rules are a must in swimming pool because there is a safety concern. So of course follow the rules when you are in any situation where safety of your life is on the line.
Rest of the times, it is okay if you don’t follow rules while doing public speaking in designed rules or starting your company as outlined by others. Break them if you feel like – but in swimming pool, do follow them.
5 Tips For Smooth Swimming
Your swim suit is the first and last thing which will have an impact on how you swim. When you buy the cheap swimming attire then it will be soggy and heavier and will act as resistance.
I did buy the cheap swimming short and boom I was happy because I saved the money. But about after a year, I bought the speedo shorts and boy was I happy. The shorts was light and when I got into the pool, it got lighter. It was magical that the cloth got lighter despite being wet in water.
It was as if I wasn’t wearing anything. So go on and buy the best shorts which you can. The swimming is going to only get better.
Under water you can see the things. But if you are in ocean then the water is salty so it will irritate your eyes. And if you swim in the river then the dirt or plant remains might go in your eyes. And if you swim in swimming pool then chlorine in the water will mess you.
So swimming without googles is a bad idea. Invest in a nice googles which fits properly on your ears. And boom you will have discovered a new world of possibilities.
Go get swimming and enjoy the view beneath. Take your time to swim slowly once in a while.
Leave the shyness at home. No matter what type of clothing you choose to wear, either it will be short or tight or both. Swimming is supposed to be done in such clothes. Else you will become heavy with water absorption and there will be difficulty in swimming.
Doesn’t matter if you think many people are staring at you. Because no matter how good or bad you look, people are going to stare. They got nothing better to do.
But don’t let them ruin the moment of swimming for you. Because after the swimming session is over, all of them will forget what you were wearing. But the moment of stress and fearful swimming will stay with you.
If you had to choose then why choose something which will do bad for you in the long run.
So go ahead and wear those bikinis if that pleases you and get to swimming. All of us are here for that – go get swimming.
Focus on your own growth rather than comparing it with someone else’s. There will be many people swimming alongside you and some might be your colleagues.
But if you think of your progress as a failure because you didn’t match them then it is a wrong idea. You aren’t here for training to get best in the world. You are here to enjoy the swimming, the happiness it brings and blissful effect it has on your body and mind.
Everyone is at some different level – some are beginner like you and some are advanced like others and so if you compare yourself then you will seem to fall short. But their goals are different from them. They might be training for an event – they want to get best in their area.
Whatever it is don’t let it distract you. Goal no. 1 for you is to improve little bit every week and that’s it. Be happy and measure your progress against yourself. Now go get swimming.
Don’t become dependent on anyone’s company. If you go to swimming only with your buddies then change the narrative.
If hey don’t come then you will be tempted to not go. But resist that temptation and go solo. When you do this repeatedly you will have formed a habit where you are free to join or not join.
Remember if you find yourself not going on to swimming then better it be because you didn’t want to. And not because your friend won’t go.
Be independent or your choice to swimming. Sure it would be nice if your buddy tagged along. But be happy going solo swimming too.
5, 4, 3, 2 – Swimming Training Module
Whenever I was tired after running miles, I thought I couldn’t continue. And then resting for a few minutes fueled me to run another mile. It was a magical moment to realize that sometimes your mind gives up before your body does. So going for the extra mile is often a good thing to do.
But running is something which is messy, sweaty and requires you to constantly feel to drink water. It is a nightmare to run so long and then realize that it is a small distance – and you are just too much tired.
Back in the day when there was no choice for me, running is the best thing I did in winter. It was chilly in the morning, many people will enjoy their extended sleep and I would look forward to the alarm. The one which will alert me to wake me up because I do find it hard to wake up. But the sheer joy of running compels me to get up and run.
But something changed over the years. My friends didn’t had the same enthusiasm and I became reluctant to get up and do the run. Slowly my weight around my belly started growing because of my sedentary lifestyle and eating habits. Oily foods with all the spices – I love them all. And no wonder, the more I procrastinated the more difficult it seemed to run or even try.
And then I found my love for swimming – it was not sweaty and I didn’t need to check for water every 2 seconds. Since I was in water while swimming, my body was more happy to stay there than in running state.
The natural progression for me was to keep swimming and do running as situation arises. I hardly get tired after a swim, even when I rest I am floating in water. So it helps me stay awesome even when I am down.
When you do any kind of exercise, it is good to start and stick to a training module. Because it helps you keep track of your consistency and if you need to level up – you have the numbers to shoot for.
So for a consistency level and to maintain a good feel routine after work – I prefer a 5, 4, 3, 2 training module.
Here is the breakdown of the training I do while swimming
- 4 freestyle swimming and 1 frog style
- 3 freestyle swimming and 1 frog style
- 2 freestyle swimming and 1 back float style
- 1 freestyle and 1 no breath freestyle
All of the above are semi-laps. If you have the stamina then go for the laps. Either way this is a great starting point, and the best thing is to create a customized training module which suits you.
Now that you know the numbers and styles to hit, go get swimming. See you at the end of the lap.
